We'll be starting tonight's chat with Yvette Vickers in just ten minutes so get a few preliminary questions out to me.

Can you say three minutes? I knew you could (The moderator has a sense of humor this evening).

Hello and welcome to the beginning of the film, er chat.
Redwing
You were discovered in a coffee house weren't you? What do you remember about that day?
Yvettevickers
Well, I wasn't discovered in a coffee house, I was discovered in a performance theater in Hollywood. The coffee house was a place where I would go after the theater. I was seen by a casting woman Ruth Birch and she came into the coffee house and she put me in a White Rain commercial
Aaalooker
Hello Yvette, Welcome to Chat !! We are happy to have you join us. :):) What was it like on your first visit to Playboy?
Yvettevickers
Thank you, aaalooker. It was handled beautifully. Russ Meyer did my centerfold shoot. He was a favorite, not only of mine but in the whole city. I loved working with him, I thought his photos were marvelous. He would come out in these military outfits and was this bear of a man and at the same time kind of disappeared when you did your shots and let you be yourself.
People in New York (the press), were more interested in you if you were in Playboy. I was in "The Gang's All Here" on Broadway. They thought it was terrific and I received many interviews because of my connection with Playboy.
Jae68
Hi Yvette, can you tell us what you've been doing since you appeared in Playboy, and what you are working on at the moment?
Yvettevickers
Well, for many years (25) after my centerfold, I worked in TV, I was in "Wells Fargo", "The Rebel"...I did all the shows. I worked with Lee Marvin. I was often cast as a juvenile delinquent.
Then I went into some film work. The 2 science fiction films that I am connected with are "Attack of the 50 Woman" and "The Giant Leeches." As funny as those titles are, there is a whole group of sci-fi fans who are very into these films.
Since then I've been more into the theater, TV and music. I've been singing original music. I hope to have a recording out soon that I have produced.
Jae68
Your Playboy article says that you are a bit daring. What's the wildest (or thoroughly dangerous) thing you have ever done?
Yvettevickers
I am adventurous! I would say in New york city when I went to work, I lived in the Village. I went for a walk one night around midnight and I didn't know that it would be dangerous. I was looking in a hardware store window and a group of men approached me. I knew it was bad from what they were saying and for some reason, I started yelling at them. I started yelling that I wanted the bucket in the window and pretended to be "unintentionally" crazy and they ran away.
Redwing
Do you remember what record you were about to play in your layout?
Yvettevickers
Well, I know that they were all jazz recordings I assume that since they were all records that I had brought to the shoot, that it was Billy Holiday, Charlie Parker or it could have been Miles Davis.
Budsms
Hi, Yvette. Tell us about some of the music you're working on lately.
Yvettevickers
One of the songs is a song about someone like me. It's a love song so I don't know if i can sing it myself, but it's called "Oh What A Dame". It's kind of a blues tune. I'm going to try to do that.
The musicians are very good jazz musicians. The arrangements are jazz oriented, but I'm hoping to get a mixture of styles. Blues, ballads, country....I'm going to try to do just the blues sort of album. I'm going to base an album around old standards such as Cole Porter, Gershwin, etc.
Renojack
Do you have any children and have they pursued the modeling business?
Yvettevickers
No, I do not have any children. I had the idea that if I became a mother that I should have the time to be with them The way my career was going, I did not have the time to have children.
Jae68
What tv shows or movies have you been in?
Yvettevickers
I've been in "Dragnet" quite a bit, "Pete Kelly's Blues." I did "Wyatt Earp" on TV and "The Texan." At MGM I did the "Asphalt Jungle." There are literally hundreds.
Wil
I've read that you name is "Vedder", and I've read that it's "van Vedder". Which one is right?
Yvettevickers
Well, my maiden name is Vedder. My stage name is Vickers. I think that someone was trying to alliterate and they thought it would be easier to remember if Van Vedder was used It was used in the theater, I think mostly.
Budsms
Why couldn't you sing a love song yourself?
Yvettevickers
I guess what I meant was that it was about how great a woman was, so I would feel weird about singing it if it were me, if I were the love object I was singing about. I think that it would be OK though if I sang it in third person.
Redwing
I see a cigarette in the ashtray, was it yours?
Yvettevickers
They added that maybe to make it looked a little debauched, because I don't smoke. I did smoke briefly for about 6 months, but it gave me headaches and I decided to quit.
Aaalooker
Yvette, how did your friends view your posing as a Playmate, due to the fact that it was more of a hush, hush, thing back then?
Yvettevickers
My Hollywood friends and people I had studied with knew me as a serious worker, but it was fine with them. The people I knew as a child, especially the Catholic school people, didn't like it. My girlfriends I knew from convent school thought it was wrong.
Jae68
What did you think of Playboy in 1959? and what do you think of it today?
Yvettevickers
I've always thought that it was an excellent magazine with good writers and great photography and I still do. The women are still gorgeous. It is a positive message. It doesn't hurt anyone to be romantic. Anyone that's comfortable with romance and good art will like the magazine.
Renojack
Do you feel there is too much skin shown in the current PB (as compared to your pictures)?
Yvettevickers
That's a good question. It isn't the skin that bothers me. I think the female form is very beautiful. I can't put a barrier on that. You see everything in a museum. There's definitely more showing, but I think it's in good taste.
Redwing
Would you have posed for Playboy back then, with today's standards?
Yvettevickers
Probably. I think so. I do have maybe one inhibition. I would want some form of drapery to "cover the waterfront."
David2
If Playboy asked, would you pose again?
Yvettevickers
Yes. I was preparing to do that and show that people can look good when they're older. But I really started getting into music and it took me in a whole different direction and I just kind of put it on the back burner There are other things going on right now in my life and I wasn't in touch with a good photographer.
Wil
You were linked romantically to stars like Cary Grant. Was your reputation in that regard overplayed?
Yvettevickers
No. I did know him. We were very good friends and were very close. There were many actors.... I understand Julia Roberts perfectly.A lot of times if I were working with someone that I was attracted to, we would date.I dated Cary Grant, Jim Hutton (Tim's dad), Steve Cochran, Hugh O'Brian...You bond to people who you work with sometimes.A very important influence in my life was Ralph Meeker alsoHe was a great friend as well as a boyfriend.
Jae68
Do you consider yourself beautiful? and at what age did you come into that beauty?
Yvettevickers
I don't see myself as a beauty. I see a quality like Brigitte Bardot, sort of sensual and curvy. I think I have a pretty face and a well structured body. Beauty to me is way beyond me. Someone like Lana Turner is beautiful to me. But I am very happy with the way I look.
Wil
Who was your favorite leading man? Paul Newman?
Yvettevickers
He certainly is one of them! He was wonderful to work with. We had more scenes in "Hud" than came out in the film I had a lot more experience with him than you would think. He did direct me, and I liked working with him.
James Cagney directed me in "Short Cut to Hell." It was great to work with him. There are no words to say how fine of a man he was.
Albertandmarina
Hi Yvette. Where can we write to you for your autograph?
Yvettevickers
There is a post office box: PO Box 720-664, Pinion Hills, CA 92372.
Kahless
Does being a past Playmate still affect your life now?
Yvettevickers
Yes, I think so. I think many people that I meet, when I go to film conventions as well as Playboy conventions are curious about my present activities as well as how the Playboy layout affected my career I would say it was a very positive experience. Many people become interested in it.
Redwing
Do you prefer guys with or without beards?
Yvettevickers
laughs hysterically.
Yvettevickers
It depends on the softness of the hair. I like a beard if it's soft. But if it's bristly or rough, then they have to put on a cream rinse.
Jae68
What was the Playboy Mansion like in 1959?
Yvettevickers
I wasn't there. I'm from California so I didn't see the mansion in Chicago, and I've only recently been to the Mansion in Beverly Hills. I don't know what the comparison would have been, but the Mansion West is magnificent. I was working so much that I had very little social life. The only other people I saw were other actors. Which was probably why I only dated other actors.
Yvettevickers
smiles.
Aaalooker
Your thoughts about the new Cyber Club, and this chat session?
Yvettevickers
I think it's great. I think it's a wonderful idea and I hope it prospers and grows. I love to talk, as you can tell. :) I love to sit here with no makeup and still be able to talk to everybody. It's terrific.
Moderator2
It almost slipped by me but we've only 5 minutes left... Last questions, comments etc. are due...
David2
What do you think about the resuming popularity of coffee houses? And how are they different today from days gone by?
Yvettevickers
I'm very happy about it. I love them then and I love them now. I think it's a good atmosphere. it's healthy, there seems to be many intelligent people, the entertainment is great. It's very stimulating. I also happen to love coffee!
Yvettevickers
smiles.
Yvettevickers
I think that they are very similar.
Jae68
How did your family react to you posing in Playboy?
Yvettevickers
I'll never know. They never mentioned it. I don't know if they ever saw it. We're very close, but they never did bring it up. I thought that maybe they just weren't interested. I know that if they did hear of it that they would see it as a career move.
Redwing
Yvette, are you planning on being at the Chicago Glamourcon?
Wil
What fan conventions will you be attending this year?
Yvettevickers
I plan on being at the Glamourcon in September in LA. I don't fly so the other conventions are very difficult. I do go to the Hollywood collectors show and there's a Pasedena convention that I've been to. I will also be in an upcoming Glamour Girls Then & Now issue which you can see me in.
Redwing
Yvette, thanks so much for joining us. Will you come back?
Jae68
Thanks for chatting with us, Yvette. It's been a pleasure. I hope you can come back and do it again.
Wil
We need a lot longer to discuss your career further. Will you come back and do this again?
Aaalooker
Yvette, it was very enjoyable listening to you and your comments, thanks for sharing them with us, please come back again, Aaalooker :):)
David2
Yvette, it's been great chatting with you tonight! I'd love to have you come back to chat again.
Yvettevickers
That makes me feel so happy. I would love to come back in the future!
Redwing
Yvette, what about taking the train to Chicago?
Ricky9
Bravo, Bravo. ( loud applause ) thank you for this chat!
Yvettevickers
I went to a convention in Baltimore on the train. I was so worn out from the trip because the train broke down. Even though I had a sleeper, it wasn't really a good idea.
Rogerrabbit
Who publishes Glamour Girls Then and Now?
Yvettevickers
Bunny Yeager publishes the magazine, and Steve Sullivan is the editor.
I look forward to the next chat. It has been wonderful. Thank you everyone for attending!
Yvettevickers
smiles.
Rogerrabbit
